Today we are investigating the personality type of Barack Obama, using the Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) and the Big Five Personality Traits.
Barack Obama is the former president of the United States. He was the 44th president. He served two terms which ranged from 2008 to 2016 as a member of the Democrat party. He was also a former senator. Before getting into politics, he was a lawyer specializing in civil rights.
Barack Obama Personality Type – Big Five
Openness
I think Barack Obama is somewhere in the middle of the openness scale. He seems largely conventional in personality. Despite being a democrat and promoting left-leaning views, he actually seems quite conservative as a person. He is obviously interested in big important issues and ideas. At a push, I might place him in the middle, to slightly higher than average on openness.
Conscientiousness
He has definitely achieved a lot in his career. He seems like someone that would have been a good student. He graduated from Columbia University and Harvard Law School. This shows he is high in many aspects of trait conscientiousness. For example, showing high levels of discipline, dutifulness, industriousness, and achievement-seeking. I would say Barack Obama is on the high end of the conscientiousness scale.
Agreeableness
From what I have seen, Barack Obama seems relatively high on the agreeableness scale. He doesn’t seem to engage in too many conflicts with people. Certainly not when compared to someone like Donald Trump. However, his agreeableness could be due to an outward persona.
Extroversion
Barack Obama certainly comes across as on the lower end of the extroversion scale. He seems mostly reserved, and low on impulsivity.
Neuroticism
He seems very calm, measured and in control. He is also a very good public speaker and shows little nerves and anxiety. I think he is on the low end of the neuroticism scale.
Barack Obama Personality Type – MBTI
I would put type him as a ISTJ. However, I think it’s a close call between some of the preferences. He is introverted. I don’t think it’s too obvious whether he is a sensing or intuitive type, but I am leaning to a sensor. He mostly seems to be leading with logic rather than emotion, his persona certainly comes across as somewhat on the cold and emotionless side. His history suggests he was a good student and academic with a strong work ethic, so, I’m going with a judging type.
Final Comments
I think there is a good chance his personality is modified by the persona that he portrays, aka, his social mask. We may not be seeing his full true personality. His temperament is actually conventional and conservative. However, he is very left-leaning in his political views. I suspect he is adapting his views, and therefore his persona to benefit the situation and his career. Some politicians and people in general are known to be opportunists, adapting to a situation for their own benefit.
On the surface, he seems like a very respectable, thoughtful, and moral person. However, when you dig deeper, you see there might be more to it. This is just my thoughts and speculations on his character.
